Belfast Trojans claimed Shamrock Bowl XXVI in a tightly contested encounter with UL Vikings on Saturday afternoon in Dublin's Tallaght Stadium. The 16-14 victory over the Limerick side completes a remarkable season for the Trojans who have gone through the season unbeaten.
The Trojans opened the scoring as an early fumble by the Vikings was clinically seized upon by rookie Chris Colvin who advanced into the endzone for a 6-0 lead. The Vikings responded with Quarterback Marc Ashworth finding wideout player Sean Goldrick in a quality 30-yard pass to advance into the Belfast 10; Running back Adrian Garvey made the break for his side's opening touchdown which was converted.
MVP of the match,Neil Montgomery, was starting to stand out in the match with his physical presence gaining yards for his side. The Trojans carried a 13-7 lead into the second half , but it was the UL Vikings who started strongest, with running backs Garvey and James Tomey featuring prominently. Twomey would give the Vikings the slimmest of leads when he broke the outside line to cross over into the endzone. A successful conversion kick gave the Vikings a 14-13 lead. However a successful field kick by Rick Duffield again moved the Trojans on front and at 16-14 the score would remain unchanged up until the end of the match to make the Belfast Trojans Shamrock Bowl Champions 2012.
